Although the martial art belts were originally thought to be only two colors over time they have extended to several different colors. In Japan they do tend to still use a white belt and then when the student graduates then a black belt is given. Although this is fine in the western world it is more common for different colors to be used. The colors of the taekwondo belts are traditionally white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, red and black.

In the very varied and mixed world of traditional martial arts, there is one constant aspect of all training styles and that is the colour of the belt you wear signifies your rank within your particular type of martial arts.
