Bruce Lee first studied the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun before finding that it had some limitations when it came to the unpredictability of a street fight. Many of the traditional martial arts teach and practice rigid movements and patterns that can make it hard to predict spontaneous attacks that can occur in a setting such as street fight. Bruce Lee began working on his own style that didn’t have these restrictions but rather encouraged you to remain flexible and fluid.

First of all the most important type of punching within Jeet Kun Do is what is known as a straight lead. This kind of punch is not necessarily very powerful but it is certainly very fast. It is also extremely accurate and when executed properly will be felt before it is seen. The key to a straight lead should always maintain some movement and remain very loose. A punch from movement can be delivered faster than from a static arm and is also harder to predict or foresee.
